Gender roles in Canada are one of the most transformed areas in society. The early 1900’s had distinctive views of the roles of men and women in society. Nearly a century later there is a dramatic difference in that view and there is social equality between sexes. There are general roles that are created based on the physical features of humans. These affect the way people dress, form families, and want to portray themselves in society. With that, the general outlook and opinion of different genders in Canada is evolving.
In the early 20th century a majority of women were legally married, with a low rate of separation or divorce. The role of relationships changed with time as well. In the early 1900’s only 1 in every 1000 women were divorced, in the mid 1900’s the number increased to 4 in 1000, and at the beginning of the 21st century 120 women are divorced for every 1000. Men’s roles in relationship at the beginning of the 20th century were clear and known as the head of the house. Roles of women changed during the Second World War though, while many men were out fighting. When a child was born in Canada prior to 1981, the father’s ancestry was the only one that was documented with the child. A women’s ancestry was not considered or recorded with her children until 1981. This would cause each person to only have one place of origin. These factors were only considered with the European or “white” origins children though. In contrast, the aboriginal and other minority groups were still treated differently in society. Overtime the means of only having one origin faded and after 1981 a person was allowed to list as many ethnicities as necessary on paperwork. A recent nationwide study in Canada showed that 56% of men are grocery shopping for the household, what would usually be considered a society norm for women. Also statistics are showing that 3 out of every 10 households have the women making more money annually than the men. Society norms are diminishing and politics are no longer a part of the home, families are dividing “work” based on family needs. Of the households that half stay at home parents, nearly half of those are fathers. There are many different views and outlooks based on women and men’s role in society. Within every country though you will see a change with time on what society finds normal for genders. As shown with statistics of Canadian divorce rate, child’s ancestry tracing and also male’s interaction within the household.
